With 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island Rakiura, Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority. The Council encompasses the management and improvement of physical assets such as roads, bridges, water supply, cemeteries, and parks, along with the Southland community's social, economic, cultural, and environmental well-being.
Our 200+ staff are diverse in their backgrounds, skillsets, and locations, spread across three Invercargill offices (Forth Street, 20 and 42 Don Street) and seven area offices situated in Riverton, Otautau, Te Anau, Winton, Oban, Lumsden, and Wyndham.
About the role:
As part of the Strategy and Policy directorate, the environmental policy team is responsible for policy development and implementation of legislated changes to the District Plan, ensuring the District Plan is maintained and legally robust, along with the successful delivery of Council's vision for the future of Southland.
Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Leading, developing, and inspiring our dedicated environmental planning team.
Ensuring best practice strategic planning and advice is provided around the management of our environment, including analyzing and implementing national legislation changes.
Leading the development of key projects from high-level outcomes to project plan formation.
Coordinating submissions to central government and other relevant agencies that result in proactive advocacy.
Managing the development of written strategies, policies, and plans, including options papers, submissions, reports, and consultation documents for publication.
Providing support to other teams through the development and reviewing of policy documents, providing analysis of data, and identifying trends on key issues impacting and influencing our district.
Providing objective analysis and timely advice crucial for effective governance and strategic planning.
Our ideal candidate will:
Have an appropriate tertiary qualification in planning, resource management, strategy/public policy, or environmental management with 8+ years post-qualification working experience.
Have proven people leadership and management skills, with a drive to develop yourself and your team.
Ideally hold a current membership with the NZ Planning Institute.
