Wellington based preferred (outside Wellington will be considered)An exciting opportunity leading a team that works across government in supporting Aotearoa New Zealand's transition to a low-carbon economy and enabling New Zealand to adapt to the impacts of climate change.The Climate Change Chief Executives Board has been established as an Interdepartmental Executives Board (Climate IEB) made up of Chief Executives from relevant Government agencies. Its function is to support delivery of the Government's climate priorities and coordinate reporting on the implementation of cross-agency actions and strategies on climate change, including the implementation of the Emissions Reduction Plan and National Adaptation Plan. It monitors, reports and advises the Climate Priorities Ministerial Group on progress at the economy wide level.The Climate IEB Unit provides secretariat support and advice to the Board and leads the delivery of the Board's monitoring reports. The Unit works across 20 plus agencies to collate and analyse data and present narratives on progress across the Government's priorities. We track progress of policy delivery, leading indicators, and any external challenges. We also lead delivery of an adaptive management approach to provide advice on how we are tracking against emissions budgets.We are looking for an Executive Director who will support the Board to develop and oversee a work programme that will deliver on climate change outcomes, including the implementation of the emissions reduction plan. This is a busy role, requiring presenting to Ministerial meetings, chairing cross agency Director meetings and effectively working with senior leaders across the Board agencies.You'll have the ability to provide innovative ways of thinking and will possess great people leadership skills.Ko tau e whakarato ai - what you'll deliverAs Executive Director, you will serve as the lead advisor to the Board on strategy and performance with regards to its mandated functions. In this role you will:manage the work of the Board, including agendas, forward planning, monitoring reports and risk assessmentsestablish and manage a high quality secretariat function for the Board, with responsibility for management of staff and budgetsensure cross-agency climate objectives are delivered and the Government is supported in making well informed, evidence-based decisionsbe responsible for the ongoing administration, monitoring and reporting on policies, programmes and statutes, in cooperation with agencies and according to statutory obligationsassist the board to engage across government agencies on climate mitigation and adaptation.To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated experience delivering complex cross agency policy work programmes across government. You will also bring:strong leadership skills and a highly collaborative operating stylea sound understanding of climate change policy and the systems, sectors and actors involved in climate mitigation and adaptationsharp intellect and an ability to lead, influence and manoeuvre through complex political situations effectivelyan understanding of the machinery of government including policy development and legislative processesexperience and comfort working in complex governance structures and across agenciesthe ability to engage and influence across a diverse range of stakeholderscommitment to developing your cultural capability and capacity in te ao Maoria fast paced, action-oriented approachknowledge of economic frameworks and/or monitoring and implementation of policy would be an advantage.Salary range for this role is $237,320 to $287,968 pa.
