Sustainability and Waste Team Leader Permanent | Full time A recent restructure has seen us combine the activities of sustainability and waste into one team. We have an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability and Waste Team Leader to join our Infrastructure business unit, which is part of our Operations Group.

The Operations Group is a diverse group responsible for the efficient and effective management of Council's infrastructure services (land transport services, three waters, asset management, sustainability and waste management) and delivery of a range of compliance and consenting services - including technical policy support, advice, land use and building consents, so that the growth aspirations of council and the community can be satisfied. This multi-disciplinary group also has responsibility for our organisational customer services and city-wide emergency management functions.

The Sustainability and Waste Team Leader reports to the Infrastructure Manager and is responsible for leading the sustainability and waste team, managing the work programme and providing advice to Council on sustainability and waste matters. This role is also responsible for delivering Council's Sustainability Strategy and associated outcomes, making recommendations and driving sustainable practice within the organisation.

Building strong relationships and networks with peers, colleagues, partners and the community will be a key focus of the role. This role will also be responsible for operationally implementing decisions around Council's future kerbside recycling programme.

Key skills we are looking for include:

Excellent team leadership, relationship building and problem-solving skills. A flexible 'hands on' approach to undertaking a wide range of work that may be required in connection with the sustainability and waste portfolio. Ability to coordinate, develop and implement Council responses to relevant legislative changes and emerging issues that may affect sustainability and waste policies, strategic direction, or capability. Excellent communication and organisational skills including report writing, accurate record keeping and managing budgets. Provide high quality, clear, consistent advice and subject-matter-expertise on relevant sustainability and waste matters and activities. Strong project and/or programme management abilities and experience (ideally within the waste, sustainability or environmental sector). Educated to degree level or with a comparative vocational qualification, or with a proven track record in a relevant field. Experience educating others about waste management and sustainable behaviour, including public speaking and/or workshop facilitation experience. This is a unique opportunity to join Upper Hutt City Council and contribute to delivering great outcomes for the community. Working with the Upper Hutt City Council is a rewarding way to support the community, work with a great team, and develop your career. We do more than just pay you a salary, we have a range of great benefits to support you.

With 50% of the Wellington region's green space, boutique shopping, award-winning Brewtown and quirky cafes all within walking distance, train station close by and free parking, Upper Hutt is a great choice for your next career move.
