Chief Adviser, Groceries at NZ Commerce Commission, Wellington or Auckland Mo te turanga | About the role
We are looking for a Chief Adviser to join our Groceries, Wholesale team on a fixed term basis through to December 2025. This is a senior technical role where you will provide well-informed expert technical advice, contribute to strategy development, mentor team members, and lead the delivery of key workstreams including a recently announced wholesale inquiry.
Our Groceries Wholesale team is responsible for assessing the major supermarkets' wholesale offerings, to determine whether the wholesale regime is working as intended and whether further regulatory intervention is needed. They also conduct public inquiries about further regulatory interventions and drafting and consulting on rules, and policy advocacy in relation to the grocery wholesale regime. They are currently conducting an inquiry to determine whether further regulation of grocery wholesale is needed and this role will be key to the successful delivery of this work.
This role can be based in either Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office.
The indicative salary range for this role is $145,986 - $171,748 plus 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects their individual skills, experience, and internal relativities across the organisation.

You enjoy building trusted relationships and the opportunity to influence at a senior level. You understand what it takes to establish good regulatory processes.
You work collaboratively, have a clear communication style, and take pride in providing quality mentorship. You will bring a track record of delivering results and, ideally, the ability to navigate a legal, economic, and commercial environment.
We are looking for someone with a mix of skills and experience, including:
Conceptual thinking and problem solving
Excellent verbal and written skills
Experience in building effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
Robust analysis and planning
Demonstrated experience working in projects
