Nga kawenga | About the roleA unique opportunity has become available for a Senior Health & Safety Adviser to support the commissioning process at our new Waikeria prison facility, the Waikeria extension, and the redevelopment of Christchurch Men's Prison (CMP).
The Department has done significant work in understanding its current asset base and planning for a safer and more fit-for-purpose network. Extending the new high security facility at Waikeria Prison and redevelopment of CMP have both been identified as the next strategically important sites requiring investment and development.
Join an ambitious and exciting infrastructure programme led by the Department of Corrections. We are seeking a senior-level H&S Adviser to support the health & safety function of this team. This role will be reporting to the Principal Adviser H&S (IDA and Health Services) with a dotted line to the Programme Director, Prison Redevelopment.
This is a rare opportunity to support the opening of a brand new Prison facility, and be involved at the beginning of a large complex construction programme.
Key ResponsibilitiesSome of the key tasks you'll be responsible for are:
Ensure the programme has key activities in place to meet its due diligence requirements at all stages of the programme.Management of all H&S reporting, monitoring and assurance for this project.Identification and mitigation of H&S risks, including management of risk assessments and registers, and Safety in Design activities.Developing relationships with contractors and business partners, assessing their reporting, H&S processes and contracts, in relation to H&S.Support the development of investment cases relating to the project by providing high quality H&S advice on Programme and Project level risks.This position is full-time, fixed term until June 2025. It is possible the role will be extended beyond this date pending funding decisions in 2025.
Candidates can be based Nationwide, however, we have a preference for the successful applicant to be located in Waikato, Wellington or Christchurch.
You will require a Full New Zealand Drivers Licence. The first six months of this role will require you to be able to travel to Waikeria Prison at least three days a week, and occasionally to Wellington.
A highly organised and experienced H&S professional, preferably with knowledge of the infrastructure industry and experience working in a project environment. You will be proactive, pragmatic and able to work within a fast-paced, dynamic environment, oversee complex and multiple H&S requirements, and build strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Skills and ExperienceSuccessful applicants will have the following skills and experience:
Minimum five years' experience working in a significant risk environment.Strong technical experience and analytical capability, including demonstrated knowledge and understanding of H&S legislation and industry best-practice.Proven experience working across all levels of an organisation (frontline to senior leadership) on H&S matters, able to build positive relationships as a trusted adviser.Experience in delivery of health and safety systems including risk management, safety in design, and incident reviews in a significant risk environment.Experience working in high security environments a bonus.Strong business writing and reading comprehension skills are a must in this role. Demonstrated relevant work experience and a relevant tertiary qualification in Health & Safety is required. You will ideally be a member of a professional Health & Safety body, such as IOSH, NZISM and/or HASANZ.

The midpoint of the salary range is $115,546 and the full range (85%-120%) is $98,215 - $138,656. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
