Senior Adviser at Ministry for Primary Industries, Wellington City Role type : Permanent
Location : Wellington
Salary Range, GSR D : $85,302 - $115,691 depending on skills and experience
This is an exciting time to join the Food Risk Management directorate as we are recruiting to support the regulatory regime for imported foods. Volumes of imported food increase each year and come from more diverse markets. Ensuring the imported food regulatory system remains up to date and responsive is more important than ever.
This Senior Adviser role will focus on the management and improvement of the services we provide to internal and external stakeholders and the robustness of our border management system and food import system overall. This work will include addressing recommendations made in the Auditor-General's report, Monitoring importers of specified high-risk foods.
You will work with a team to develop and maintain imported foods standards and guidelines that are practical and fit-for-purpose. You will review and improve processes that will add value to our imported food system and provide efficiencies for food importers, food businesses, and our external stakeholders.
You will engage with and support our stakeholders working across the joint border management system, such as our border officers, approved laboratories, and other government partners.
In this role, you will encounter exciting opportunities for collaboration on work, providing you the platform to interact with food businesses, industry representatives, and other agencies in the regulatory system.
We are looking for someone who is vibrant, driven, has excellent communication skills, knowledge of food safety standards and legislation, and who has experience navigating the machinery of government and fostering strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful in the role you will:
Be a confident and quick learner, with strong collaboration skills and a flexible mindset, who can work at pace and deal with ambiguity.
Have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver technical information in an easy-to-understand way.
Be able to translate technical information into tools and guidance that is appropriate and fit-for-purpose for the specific audience.
Have experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of internal and external stakeholders.
Have a flexible and adaptable approach to work and be comfortable working in an environment of continuous improvement.
Show political awareness and perception.
Have an understanding of the structure, functions, and conventions of government and their relationship to the work of MPI.
Provide high-quality governance insights and reporting when required.
The Service Delivery team sits within Regulatory Delivery, in the Food Risk Management directorate of New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS). Food Risk Management is responsible for setting standards for food production, processing, importing, and exporting; identifying emerging food safety risks; and delivering an agile and evolving food compliance and response system.
A small team of 8 people, we work closely with our regulatory delivery colleagues to support food businesses and other stakeholders with their requirements under the Food Act, Animal Products Act, and Wine Act.
Based primarily out of Wellington in Pastoral House, our team is hardworking and friendly. People enjoy working in this team because we have an energetic and positive team environment. Our work spans across many areas and so there will always be opportunities to learn, grow, and try new things.
