Ranger Freshwater Pests and Migratory Fish SpeciesJoin the Department as a Ranger specializing in freshwater pests and migratory fish species. You will contribute to containing and mitigating the impact of freshwater pests. This is a permanent full-time role based in New Plymouth, with a salary range of $68,535 - $86,423.

He angitutanga | About the roleAs our Ranger, Freshwater Pest and Migratory Fish Species, you will lead the Department's freshwater biosecurity and migratory fish work for part of our Hauraki/Waikato/Taranaki Region. You will be responsible for planning, delivering, and reporting on the freshwater pest and migratory fish work programmes.
Fostering and maintaining effective and long-term relationships is essential to success. You will work with key external partners including iwi, hapu and whanau, landowners, local government, contractors, volunteer groups, and other community members as well as internal stakeholders in the department.
You will be based in New Plymouth, with travel required around DOC's Taranaki district and the wider HWT region to complete the mahi. A full New Zealand driver licence is mandatory.

The position will focus on:
Ensuring the conservation of four migratory fish species:Longfin eel/tuna (Anguilla dieffenbachii)Shortjaw kokopu (Galaxias postvectis)Inanga (Galaxias maculatus)Lamprey/piharau (Geotria australis) Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experienceIf you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:
Passion for applied freshwater conservation with at least three years' specialized/practical expertise in:Freshwater species management.Freshwater biosecurity.Habitat restoration and/or resource management (Relevant tertiary qualification desirable).Experience in planning, delivering, and reporting operational projects, and managing multiple tasks effectively.Proven track record of successfully delivering projects in collaboration with Tangata Whenua and various partners.Ability to lead and execute complex tasks, including aquatic pest eradications.Work style focused on driving and sustaining momentum.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.Comfort with ambiguity and demonstrated ability to work with experts to understand technical advice and matauranga Maori.Willingness to travel and conduct night-time fish surveys as required.Current full New Zealand driver's license required. Mo te tima | About the teamThe Ranger will be one of 13 Freshwater Rangers located across the country and working on Freshwater Biosecurity and Freshwater Migratory Fish. They are supported by North and South Island Freshwater Coordinators and the Freshwater Science and Technical Teams.
The Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation/historic, community engagement, and visitor centre teams.
