The salary range for this position is $60,314 to $75,603, pro rata.
Full time, 5-month fixed term or secondment opportunity through to the end of June 2025, based in Rakiura/ Stewart Island.

He angitutanga | About the role
Pest-free Ulva Island/Te Wharawhara is one of the few pest-free open sanctuaries in Aotearoa. It's a showcase of what predator free efforts can aspire to achieve, a haven for a range of threatened species, a key regional tourist destination, and an important contributor to the local eco-tourism industry.
To maintain the pest-free status of the island, constant vigilance and top-quality biosecurity management is essential. This role will be focussed as a district lead for biosecurity, ensuring the biosecurity plan is delivered to a high standard.
Additional responsibilities will include managing the quarantine process and infrastructure, as well as advocacy, outreach, and implementing the recommendations from performance audits. The role will also assist in developing a community based consultative body to help connect locals to the project, empowering them to influence planning and outcomes.
Private accommodation on the island is limited; if required we have staff accommodation available in a shared house.

If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
a full driver's licence
a good understanding of and/or experience in island biosecurity work including quarantine and pest surveillance methods
a high level of attention to detail
quality communication skills both verbal and written
skills in the use of technology such as GPS
the ability to create and maintain quality relationships with the community and local businesses
a high level of physical fitness
a high level of independence along with experience working alone in the field
ability to lead and coach a team

skippers ticket/ boating experience
Mo te tima | About the team
The Operations Team on Rakiura/ Stewart Island is responsible for delivering the Department's conservation activities across Rakiura and its surroundings and are part of the Southern South Island region. The team consists of around 20 permanent staff and 13 temporary/casual staff based in Oban. We are a small, friendly team who are looking for someone who can work well as part of our team and contribute positively to our biodiversity programme.
We work strongly in partnership with tangata whenua in the management of lands and taonga species and have multiple strategic partnerships in action that support and enhance the conservation work that we do.
