Take a leadership role providing strategic advice and direction!Fixed term/secondment available until 31 October 2025.Based in Wellington at National Office however location can be flexible across Aotearoa.Nga kawenga |About the role We are seeking a pro-active and dynamic individual to join our Organisational, Resilience and Safety Team as a Principal Adviser Custodial Practice. This role reports to the Integrated Systems Team and supports improving custodial systems and practice.
As an experienced Principal Adviser in custodial practice, you'll be responsible for the development and provision of advice and support to operational and practice leadership teams to ensure that practice development and application of practice in the field is effective, consistent, and continuously improving. You'll develop custodial practices, ensuring current best practice is integrated into the department's systems and implemented. You'll also provide high-quality support and advice to the Chief Custodial Officer.
Some of the key tasks you'll be responsible for are:
Leads the development of interventions and solutions that will ensure the quality of practice delivery is professional, effective, and efficient.Provides advice to the Chief Custodial Officer on practice initiatives and improvements identified through both local and/or international best practice improvements.Identifies and advises the Chief Custodial Officer of risks in relation to practice and offender management, ensuring risk is well managed and that appropriate documentation is maintained by practitioners.Maintains and promotes close and effective relationships with operational leaders, practice leaders and practitioners seeking feedback to improve services.Models work professionally and collaboratively with other technical experts and practitioners from across the department to ensure that practice developments and issues are shared and are able to effect an offender-focussed approach through complimentary practice.This position is fixed term until 31 October 2025 and based in Wellington at our National Office. Location can be flexible across Aotearoa with flexible work opportunities.
We are seeking someone with a proven track record of success preferably in a custodial environment or similar role but can demonstrate ability to influence and lead practice.

Professional credibility and demonstrated commitment to working within ethical and legal boundaries.Demonstrated ability to influence and lead practice.Ability to build and maintain rapport with others based on their own integrity and honesty, demonstrating effective interpersonal skills.An understanding of the research into what works and the engagement models in use for dealing effectively with people.Demonstrated ability to work effectively in peer and stakeholder relationships.Recent experience within the last 2 years in a custodial operating setting (desired).Demonstrated relevant work experience is required, as well as an undergraduate tertiary qualification with a major in a relevant discipline e.g. Criminology, Psychology (desired).

The midpoint of the salary range is $137,525 and the full range (85%-120%) is $116,897 - $165,030. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
