Nz Native Plant Specialist/ Horticulturalist

About the Role This is a unique opportunity for someone with in-depth knowledge of NZ native plants and our ecosystem. Based in Birkenhead, two days per week, this role is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of an established collection of Native NZ plants (some of which are unusual and rare). Located on a 12-acre site you will be working alongside a small group of passionate volunteers who contribute their time to support with routine tasks. As an employee of Landscape Solutions, you will be the key contact on site with key stakeholders. You will be supported in this role by our broader horticultural teams. An average day will see you carry out general site maintenance, including gardening, horticulture, planting, weeding, pruning, watering, spraying and mulching. However, the nature of the collection of plants that you will be looking after will mean that your experience and knowledge in this field is much more than average. This site requires someone with a passion for Native NZ plants, good plant knowledge, identification, disease identification and understanding of the larger ecosystem. The collection is a key part of Auckland's heritage and showcases mature native trees, an extensive grass collection, alpine plants, over 50 varieties of ferns, climbers, groundcovers and more. Featuring specimens from the Poor knights, Kermadec, Chatham Islands and many locations across NZ. What you will be doing • Overseeing the general maintenance and upkeep of the plant collections • Gardening duties including but not limited to weeding, trimming, mulching, pruning, propagating etc… • Maintaining and improving the site presentation. • Manual handling involving physically moving and removing vegetation and debris. • Weed spraying • Reporting • Raising recommendations • Working to all site and company Health and Safety and operational standards About You • Enjoy working outdoors • Good physical fitness. • Enjoy working in a hands on role • Restricted or Full 1 NZ driver's licence • Have proven experience working with NZ Native plants.
