The Company: Waimea Nurseries is one of New Zealand's largest nurseries, growing fruit trees for orchardists, and fruit, ornamental and berry plants for garden retailers.
Celebrating 50 years in 2021, the nursery now covers over 300 hectares with a mix of field and container production.
Owned by the Waimea Group, a private family-owned company, Waimea Nurseries operates alongside related businesses – a Fruit Intellectual Property Management and Development Company in Nelson, a Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory in Hastings, a GOL Plant Nursery and Potting Mix business in Auckland.About the Role: Based near Richmond, Nelson we are looking for an experienced and self-motivated person who can hit the ground running and is able to utilise their experience and skills to engage with staff from day one.This is a hands-on role, where you will be responsible for helping to shape and lead our Safety culture and improve our H&S processes, policies, and procedures.
We are searching for someone who would enjoy being out and about in the field locally (as well as regular trips to our other businesses) in order to engage with our staff and support our Team Leaders and Managers.This is not a box ticking role.
Instead, you will be highly visible, influencing a positive H & S culture across our three sites to ensure a high level of safety awareness around incident prevention; including monitoring, analysing, and reporting on safety, compliance and risk management.Key Responsibilities:Help develop and implement HSW work plans and systems, in collaboration with the GM – Operations.Promote a positive HSW culture across the business and encourage active participation at all levels.Provide guidance, advice, and mentorship to staff, enhancing their HSW engagement and capabilities.Help to ensure compliance with all HSW legislative requirements and maintain up-to-date records.Help to develop then implement an auditing program that complements our HSW workplans.Facilitate HSW training for employees, ensuring ongoing development and compliance.Support the integration of HSW programs at our other sites.Work closely with the Manager – People, Talent and Performance in the ongoing development and implementation of Learning and Development modules.Maintain communications with external parties as needed including WorkSafe NZ.Manage near-miss reporting, hazard identification, incident reporting and investigations while upskilling the team so that any occurrence becomes an opportunity to learn and improve.Undertake a programme of verification, and support Managers with the identification and implementation of improvements.Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:Relevant qualifications in Health, Safety & Wellbeing.3+ years of experience in a similar HSW Advisor role, preferably in the primary or manufacturing sector.Able to demonstrate a solid working knowledge of HSWA, regulations, safe work instruments and Approved Codes of Practice.Experience with investigations, audits, reporting etc.Excellent interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach.Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, with the ability to identify trends and provide actionable insights.High level of computer literacy, competent with MS Office Suite and Safety related software.Why Join Us?
