Auckland One Rail is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Rolling Stock Maintenance to lead our maintenance operations for our fleet of passenger trains. This senior leadership position will be based at our Wiri Depot and is critical in ensuring operational excellence, reliability, and safety in our services.
About the Role As the Head of Rolling Stock Maintenance, your objective is to establish and develop the rolling stock team to undertake routine maintenance of our rolling stock from late 2025 and beyond including the refurbishment and major overhaul of our EMUs to ensure fleet compliance, safety and comfort of our passengers.
The Head of Rolling Stock Maintenance is responsible for the main activities required to set up the rolling stock maintenance business unit as well as develop long-term strategies to drive a continuous improvement culture within the Wiri depot-based team.
The role works under the general direction of the GM Assets within the Asset and Maintenance group and liaises with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including engineers, operational personnel, service providers, contractors, the client, and members of the public.
Your responsibilities will include the development and implementation of maintenance strategies, management of maintenance budgets, oversight of performance metrics, and collaboration with other departments to enhance overall train service reliability. You will also drive innovation in maintenance practices using technology and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities Lead the strategy development and delivery of actions required to transition the rolling stock maintenance activities from the current EMU maintainer to Auckland One Rail by end of 2025.Ensure the Auckland One Rail rolling stock activities undertaken by the current contractor are delivered in line with requirements of Auckland One Rail Rolling Stock Engineering requirements.Lead and mentor the maintenance team, shaping a positive and inclusive work culture, providing guidance and support to foster professional growth.Manage the maintenance budget and resources efficiently.Be the main point of communication with AOR's partners to draw on their expertise and knowledge on rolling stock maintenance and workshop operational management.Provide engineering leadership and management for the maintenance of the rolling stock fleet (95 EMUs).About You You are a proven leader with a deep understanding of rolling stock maintenance in a rail environment. Your strong analytical skills and decision-making abilities enable you to implement effective maintenance strategies. You thrive in a collaborative environment and have a passion for driving operational efficiency and enhancing team performance.
A relevant engineering trade qualification with further studies in leadership or management qualification.Previous experience managing large unionised depots or workshop operations.Proven experience working in rolling stock or heavy industrial maintenance environments at an operational management level.Experience in implementing lean management, 6sigma or continuous improvement processes and principles.Thorough understanding of safety and regulatory compliance in rail operations.Experience managing multimillion dollar operational budgets.* Please note that we will have this ad running through the holiday season and we'll resume recruitment activities for this role from mid to late January 2025.
