The New Zealand Association of General Surgeons (NZAGS) is a membership based organisation of general surgeons throughout New Zealand. The principal functions of the Association are to represent the broad and collective interests of general surgeons particularly in the areas of vocational training, continuing professional development, workforce planning as well as acting as the interface between general surgeons, Government and components of the health sector generally.
Are you a strategic leader ready to help shape the future of general surgery in Aotearoa New Zealand? NZAGS is seeking an exceptional Executive Director to lead our organisation and advance excellence in general surgical care and training across the country.
About the Role This is a unique opportunity to lead a respected medical membership association, working 35 hours per week to drive positive change in New Zealand's healthcare landscape. You'll be responsible for advancing NZAGS's position as the leading voice for general surgery while managing key stakeholder relationships, member services, and organisational operations.
Key Responsibilities * Build and maintain strategic relationships with key health sector stakeholders, including Te Whatu Ora/Health New Zealand, RACS, and the Medical Council
* Lead advocacy efforts and represent NZAGS's interests at ministerial and governmental levels
* Oversee member services and communications, ensuring surgeons stay informed of sector developments
* Manage the NZAGS Secretariat, including supervision of the Education, Policy and Projects team
* Drive IT development initiatives to enhance member services
* Ensure sound financial management and sustainable growth
* Support the Executive Committee and coordinate strategic planning
What You'll Bring * Proven leadership experience, preferably in a not-for-profit or membership-based organisation
* Strong understanding of the New Zealand health system
* Demonstrated success in stakeholder engagement and advocacy at senior levels
* Experience in strategic planning and implementation
* Strong business acumen across finance, HR, IT, and operations
* Outstanding relationship-building and communication skills
* Professional demeanour with a warm, inclusive approach
* Passion for driving positive change in healthcare
