Disability Advocate

This role is great for people who would like the opportunity to be an advocate for people and would like to learn more about intellectual disability. We will match you in a friendship with one person who has an intellectual disability. You will be matched according to your interests and how you like to spend your spare time. By being a friend to that person, you will be able to be an advocate for them, as needed, while enjoying sharing experiences together. Being connected to a large organisation that advocates for intellectual disability, professional learning and development opportunities and being able to advocate and make a difference for people with intellectual disabilities. Most importantly, you will get to meet someone new, make a new friend and have fun!
Requirements:
You do not need any prior experience but you must have a willingness to learn, understand and empathise with intellectual disability. Good communication and the ability to be reliable is also very important. Interested people need to be kind, patient, understanding and have a genuine interest in supporting people with intellectual disability. A sense of humour would be great too! There is also a MOH mandate that all volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated.
A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
Time commitment:
2-4 hours per week.
