You'll be at the forefront of groundbreaking initiatives, working with a talented team on transformative projects that are setting new standards in the forestry industry.As a Data Scientist, you will:Champion the application of advanced data science / machine learning to drive impactful solutions for the forestry sector.Be a subject matter expert in data science / machine learning, with the ability to rapidly apply your expertise to new areas of research.Serve as a key communicator and advocate for data science and machine learning, engaging with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and industry partners to promote innovation and share insights.Lead ambitious, high-impact research projects, ensuring timely delivery while upholding the highest standards of scientific and technical excellence.Collaborate closely with colleagues and customers to translate data science breakthroughs into practical, scalable solutions for the forestry sector.Stay at the cutting edge of emerging trends and technologies and contribute to, or lead, novel advances, ensuring Scion remains a leader in this field for forestry.What are we looking for?A PhD or MSc in a relevant field, such as Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Physics, or Computer Engineering, with a strong focus on data analysis and machine learning.Proven expertise developing and applying data science and ML principles to unusual use-cases working with a variety of data types.A track record of impactful research or innovation, evidenced by publications in leading journals or significant contributions to the field.Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python) and ML stacks (e.g. PyTorch, TensorFlow).Deep knowledge of data modelling techniques, including statistical and predictive modelling, ideally involving spatial data and computer vision approaches.Familiarity with data engineering processes (e.g., ELT) and distributed computing services (e.g. Amazon AWS) is desirable.Familiarity with GIS software and tools is desirable (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS)Familiarity with robotics or 3D simulation tools is desirable (e.g. IsaacSim, Omniverse, Blender)Expertise in data visualisation, presentation and public speaking.Proven leadership experience, with a demonstrated ability to guide a team, manage projects, and drive innovationAbility to effectively plan, execute, and oversee research projects, ensuring high standards and successful outcomesScion is proud to offer:A great career that enables positive outcomes for New Zealand, AotearoaFlexible working + 9-day fortnight + 3 Company daysContinuous professional development and opportunities for progressionEnviable work environment and great teamA demonstrated commitment to Good Employer/EEO principlesWork on the edge of Rotorua's world-famous Whakarewarewa Forest.The salary range for this permanent, fulltime position is $92,000 - $108,000, depending on experience.Closing date: 8 January 2025
