Do you have an interest in helping us to develop a state of the art recovery programme for people having complex mental health needs? We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to participate in the ongoing development of the recovery programme at Tamaki Oranga Recovery Centre. Tamaki Oranga is a 20 bed, free-standing residential facility located in the South Auckland area. It serves men having complex and persistent psychiatric disability from across the motu, who are in need of a longer-term, supportive recovery programme in order to prepare for life in the community. Over half our service users are of Maaori or Pacific ethnicity, and it is a priority to make our service approach responsive to their cultural needs.
Tamaki Oranga Recovery Centre is a part of Counties Manukau District Mental Health Services. Our area comprises a population of about 600,000 and is very culturally diverse. It is one of the more urban areas of New Zealand - with easy access to all the entertainment, arts, and culture of downtown Auckland - but it also includes beautiful rural areas and regional parks. Our regional hospital, Middlemore Hospital, has the distinction of being one of the busiest acute care facilities in Australasia, and following a transformative rebuild incorporating latest technology and co-designed with our whaiora and wider community, Tiaho Mai is the newest inpatient mental health unit in the country.

Our candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, be highly organised, and possess honesty, integrity, and professionalism. You will need to have the ability to promote teamwork and navigate through the challenges of providing complex care to whaiora with complex presentations, by promoting a strong team culture and function, and a genuine focus on equitable health systems and outcomes.
Supported by the leadership team, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to strategic and service development. Working alongside the Service Manager, Acute & Hospital Services, the Clinical Head, and members of the Senior Leadership Team, you will support the implementation of service goals and grow a workplace of excellence, by applying the latest evidence to inform the model of care.
Our Consultant Psychiatrist will be supported by a team consisting of nursing staff, a psychologist, a social worker, and an occupational therapist.
You would also be a part of our psychiatric community of 70 physicians and will have allocated time and opportunity to participate in weekly Grand Rounds, peer review, continuing medical education, and quality improvement, in support of your ongoing professional development.
Vocational registration with the Medical Council of NZ in the scope of Psychiatry and a current APC is essential at commencement of employment.
