Communications Advisor – Media Liaison

We're looking for a skilled media person to provide advice and engaging content for our external communications. You'll be responsible for managing Council's reputation in the media, addressing issues promptly and maximising opportunities when they come.If you're passionate about media communications and want to make a meaningful impact, this role offers the perfect opportunity.You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.Responsibilities:Be the centralised point of contact for media enquiries and provision of media releases.Obtain the appropriate authorisation prior to releasing information on behalf of the Council.Provide communications advice and support to teams within the organisation to promote or resolve issues – this may include media appointments and publication needs.Plan and create content for media campaigns on behalf of the Council, providing content (copy, imagery & video) for online and print communications as required.Work closely with the internal and external teams to promote a coordinated and cohesive approach to Council's communication efforts.Represent Council at community meetings and consultations, to provide consistent messaging in line with communications plans.Minimum Qualifications:A tertiary degree in journalism, Communications, or a related field, with 5 years of relevant work experience.Strong understanding of communications principles and strategies.Ability to assess the broader environment and develop solutions that align with strategic goals.Capability to mentor and support team members.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead and influence outcomes.Deep understanding of media relations and effective media communication strategies.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Knowledge of Tikanga and basic proficiency in te reo Maori.Additional Information:Flexible on start and finish times.Hybrid working (home and work).Relocation assistance.Piritahi Day – an additional leave day to spend with whanau & friends.Staff Discounts at local retailers and big brands.Allocated training budget for career development and to support professional affiliation membership (where relevant to the role).Field and office-based position with flexibility to determine daily activities.Work with a great team and enjoy regular, lively social events!Here at Gisborne District Council, we pull our values from the community we serve.
