Mo te turanga | About the position
As the Strategic Communications and Engagement Manager, you will play a key role in shaping how we communicate, ensuring our messages are heard, understood, and connect meaningfully with the community. In this role, you will lead the development of a forward-thinking communication strategy that enhances Council's reputation and strengthens relationships with iwi Maori, stakeholders, and the wider community. With a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, you'll ensure that our communications are culturally respectful and inclusive.
You'll also inspire and guide a talented team, fostering a collaborative, creative environment while ensuring consistent and transparent messaging. Ultimately, you'll position the Council as a proactive and trusted voice, building trust and managing its reputation throughout Tairawhiti.
You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.
Nga Mahi nga Takohanga Matua ranei | Duties include:
Lead corporate communication strategies aimed at enhancing Council's reputation through effective stakeholder engagement, evaluation, and data-driven insights.
Provide expert advice to senior leadership on communications and reputation management, including planning for crisis communications.
Develop and implement a Te Tiriti-informed engagement framework that enables meaningful Maori participation in decision-making processes.
Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, such as government agencies, media, and community groups, reflecting Council's commitment to Te Tiriti.
Provide regular updates on consultation and engagement activities, offering guidance on emerging issues.
Oversee and manage work programmes across all teams and functions to ensure successful delivery.
Lead recruitment, training, performance management, and disciplinary processes as necessary.
Nga Pukenga me Nga Wheako e Hiahia ana | Skills and experience required:
Tertiary qualification in a relevant field of expertise, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or relevant and equivalent experience.
Demonstrated people management experience in leading high performing teams.
Experience in working with iwi/hapu mana whenua.
Exceptional risk management skills.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.
Excellent interpersonal/relationship skills and the ability to effectively establish and build on internal and external working relationships.
Analytical, strategic planning and project management expertise.
