The Office for Maori Crown Relations – Te Arawhiti (Te Arawhiti) is a departmental agency hosted by the Ministry of Justice. It supports the Crown in its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi – Treaty of Waitangi (the Treaty) by progressing historical Treaty settlements and Takutai Moana determinations and administering the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 and Nga Rohe Moana o Nga Hapu o Ngati Porou Act 2019.
Cabinet recently agreed to refocus the functions of Te Arawhiti to concentrate on closing out the Treaty settlement process and Takutai Moana applications. The Te Tumu Whakarae will provide strategic oversight of the agency's work programme and build strong and productive relationships, maintaining the trust and confidence of iwi / hapu, and stakeholders. They will offer strategic guidance and advice to Ministers and collaborate with public sector agencies in the development and implementation of that advice. They will also continue to embed Cabinet's recent decisions, ensuring the functions of Te Arawhiti are efficiently organised, correctly sized and aligned with government priorities.
To succeed in this role, you will need strong organisational leadership and delivery skills, including the ability to lead organisational change, provide high quality and evidence-based advice on complex issues. You will need excellent engagement skills and proven credibility with iwi, Treaty partner organisations, and wider Maori stakeholders. Additionally, an appreciation and application of Maori cultural identity and values, along with a commitment to tikanga Maori, matapono Maori, and kaupapa Maori, is required.
