Assistant Winemaker - Parental Leave Cover Mission Estate Winery, established in 1851, is New Zealand's oldest winery, renowned for crafting award-winning wines with a commitment to quality and tradition. Nestled in the heart of Hawke's Bay, we combine time-honoured techniques with innovation, sustainability, and a passion for excellence. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Winemaker to join our team on a fixed-term basis to support us through this exciting season.
Role Overview:
As our Assistant Winemaker, you will be a crucial member of the winemaking team, contributing to all aspects of the winemaking process from harvest through bottling. You will work alongside the Head Winemaker and other production team members to ensure the highest quality of wines in line with Mission Estate's standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in daily winery operations, including but not limited to fermentation management, blending, filtering, and bottling
Assist with data entry and record keeping using Vintrace
Assist with the generation of cellar operations
Assist with inventory management and workflow planning
Monitor and maintain wine quality and consistency
Conduct lab analysis and sensory evaluations
Collaborate with cellar staff and provide guidance as needed
Ensure compliance with health, safety, quality, and environmental management standards
Participate in vintage operations and lead hands-on winemaking tasks as required
Qualifications and Experience:
Tertiary qualification in Viticulture and Oenology, or equivalent
Minimum of 5 years' experience in a winemaking role
Strong understanding of winemaking processes and lab techniques
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail
Effective communication skills and a collaborative spirit
Flexibility to work additional hours during vintage season
