The Salvation Army in Petone. Do you have a passion for building relationships with young people and helping them to thrive and grow? Do you love to interact with people and be involved in projects that help to connect and support people within the community?
We are looking for a youth worker with a passion for community, who would be keen to work together with us as we try to effect positive change with the community of Petone.
The role is primarily a youth work role, so the ideal candidate will need to connect easily with young people and partner together with them to find solutions to the issues that they are facing. Our faith-based team is currently active in local schools, our own faith community, and the wider community. You would need to lead a combination of one-on-one youth work, adventure camps, and group work. There is also an opportunity for the right person to develop and grow programmes that align with their strengths and interests and/or needs that they identify within the community.
To do this, they will need to be innovative, willing to learn, and able to listen to the perspectives of both the young people they are working with and the communities that they live within.
Alongside this youth-based work, we would also love to find someone who can contribute to the wider community work that we run at our centre, primarily based out of our community playscape (https://www.facebook.com/petoneplayscape). This will involve connecting with families who use the playscape to build social cohesion and develop support networks, helping to facilitate and support community opportunities and events, pitching in to help out with regular activities within the playscape, and promoting initiatives relating to wider societal issues such as climate and food resiliency.
Youth work or similar qualifications are desirable but not essential if you are happy to work towards one as part of your role. Barista skills are also helpful but not essential if you are willing to learn.
