Korero mo te Turanga | About the Role The work of the Science Group at Environment Canterbury consists of providing environmental monitoring and data; and research and advice to internal and external customers.
The Science Group plays a key role in informing decision-making across most of the organisation including informing organisational strategic intent, processing of consents, our approach to compliance, responding to incidents, the development of plans, and measuring our progress towards regional and national environmental targets.
Reporting to the Manager – Environmental Data, this newly created role will lead a team that takes an interdisciplinary approach to complex environmental science problems, analysing and building innovative products that automate data retrieval and analysis to provide insights and information to inform decision-making.
As a technical people leader you'll: Monitor and mitigate risks and issues that may impact on the team's ability to deliver data insights.
Lead the team to explore and explain environmental data in novel ways that connects their audience and ensure the team can communicate data and information from multiple sources.
Advance the use of other information/data sources (e.g.
matauranga Maori, citizen science) as complementary to other data collected.
Manage resources, and conflicting priorities to deliver on outputs, priorities and agreed timeframes.
Ensure communications and enquiries are managed.
Maintain an overview of workload and ensuring resources to deliver on agreed programmes of work, including budget management.
Develop and maintain strategies, annual plans and work programmes to deliver a fit for purpose function.
From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.
The indicative annual salary range is $114000-$126000 per annum.
This is a 40 hour a week position.
Hours will be worked Monday to Friday inclusive.
The location is 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch.
Mou ¦ About You Whilst you have a strong technical capability, you're a natural connector of people and comfortable to collaborate with leaders and kaimahi to ensure alignment of projects, policies, processes, and systems to deliver the best results.
You'll bring skills and experience in the following: A Master's degree in science, mathematics, or computer science, with a strong focus on statistics, analytics, modelling, or machine learning.
Significant professional experience in data science.
Five years environmental science experience with strong insights skills, i.e., statistics/analytics/data modelling emphasis.
Experience in data governance; good data practices, working with scientific data.
Proven ability to lead teams working collaboratively as part of multi-disciplinary teams comprising scientists, analysts, data architects, data engineers, communications and engagement, and others, to deliver data insights.
Strong programming experience using a range of coding practices to build scalable data products for a range of users within a technology context.
Proven ability in triaging and prioritising the work of others to ensure effective resourcing to meet delivery targets.
Understanding of the Resource Management Act requirements in relation to environmental data, including obligations on Regional Councils.
Commitment to and an understanding of te ao Maori, awareness of the evolving obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi, together with experience of applying this in a workplace setting.
