Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand is a specialist school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. We have a focus on growth, learning and collaboration. You will be joining a nationwide team and you will share their passion and enthusiasm for delivering high quality education and services. We have 12 provisions (satellite teams) based in primary and secondary schools in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
THE ROLE / TE MAHI
We are in search of either a qualified teacher of the Deaf or an experienced New Zealand registered classroom teacher who has in-depth understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum and assessment tools. This is a permanent full-time (1.0 FTE) role and covers classroom release time in the Flatbush area.
In this role:
Our class sizes are small, ranging from 2–7 students per class group
You will be a teacher with the right skills and attitude who can work with a range of DHH students across all communication modes (including New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and spoken English) and in varying learning contexts
You will work within a Deaf Provision Teaching Team, which includes teachers and teacher aides of the Deaf, with access to other specialists as required
Your strong knowledge of the NZ Curriculum means you will have the ability to adapt the curriculum to primarily focus on literacy and numeracy with our young students.
Applications will be considered from teachers with recent knowledge and understanding of the core business of lifting student achievement and wellbeing. Prior experience working with DHH students is desirable. If required, we will support you to develop an awareness of Deaf Culture and the Deaf community. Proficiency in NZSL – or a strong commitment to learning NZSL is essential.
