The Buller District Council is seeking a Summer Safe Boating Advisor to help make our waterways safer for recreational boaters. This is a unique, short-term role, perfect for those who have a connection to the West Coast and want to contribute to their community.
About the Role: As a Summer Safe Boating Advisor, you'll work across the West Coast's popular boating locations like Lake Brunner and Lake Kaniere, providing boaters with vital safety information and advice. You'll also gather important survey data to help us understand and improve boating practices in the region. This is a non-enforcement role—your focus will be on providing guidance and gathering information to support safety initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Engage with recreational boaters and provide safer boating information and resources.
Use the Survey 123 platform to gather and analyse data about boating activities in the region.
Monitor popular boating areas to gain insights into general behaviours.
Collaborate with the Harbourmaster and Port Operations Coordinator to ensure a smooth operation.
Observe and report any serious incidents to the appropriate authorities, without taking enforcement action.
About You:
Strong communication and public engagement skills.
Passionate about boating and safety, with some experience in the maritime environment preferred.
Local knowledge or connection to the West Coast region is a plus.
A valid driver's licence and the right to work in New Zealand are essential.
Ideal for: This role is particularly suited to a local tertiary student with an interest in or studying maritime-related fields.
Training & Support: Full training will be provided by the Harbourmaster, and you will receive ongoing logistical support from the Port Operations Coordinator.
