Strategic Statutory & Issues Manager (Statutory Manager) Provide integral advice and support to the Director of Operations on our high-level engagement relationships and our statutory requirements.
Drive solutions focused initiatives in support of the Eastern North Island regions performance and delivery.
Permanent full-time, Whakatane location based.
Would explore alternative of three days Whakatane, two days wider Bay of Plenty based.

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature spaces and species across Aotearoa.
The Strategic Statutory and Issues Manager (Statutory Manager) forms part of the Eastern North Island Leadership Team and provides support and advice to the Director of Operations on our high-level engagement relationships, along with providing support and visibility to our statutory requirements as a government agency from a regional perspective.
The role is a regional role and can be based out of our Whakatane office. However, the role would need to commit to travelling across the region as required to provide support and engage with leadership team and wider operational members. This role has a focused aspect of supporting the Eastern North Island Director. The region spans across Rotorua, Tauranga, Eastern Bay of Plenty through the East Coast to Tairawhiti.
You will also be responsible for:
Supporting and leading relationships at an interagency level across both government and private sector on behalf of the Eastern North Island leadership team.
Leading and implementing integrated strategies at place within the region to achieve and build on conservation delivery at place.
Building relationships and partnerships with both the Bay of Plenty & East Coast /Hawkes Bay Conservation Boards.
Coaching and mentoring to our internal community team network within the region.
Identifying improvements in statutory processes to drive efficiencies.
Providing support to the decision maker by identifying elements of a statutory decision.
Fostering strong relationships across the department.
Supporting staff with change having a particular focus on Te Tiriti and giving effect to our partnership with Maori in a meaningful way.
Developing the Bay of Plenty Conservation Management Strategy.
Managing up to three direct reports.
You will have exceptional communication skills with the ability to work across teams with ease. You will be a natural relationship manager with the ability to think strategically and act operationally with a high level of interpersonal skills. The workload will be high so you will need to be able to remain calm and focused and work well under pressure.
Specialist skills and experience:
Proven experience in relationship management.
The ability to engage and work in partnership with Maori demonstrating an understanding and an open approach to achieving outcomes for Taiao.
Ability to review and analyse and draw insights from complex information.
Understanding of the Resource Management Act and conservation legislative frameworks.
Working experience and knowledge of Statutory systems and processes.
Able to identify risks and opportunities and evaluate them to optimise decision making.
Solutions focused mindset with proven experience through delivery.

The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation/historic, community engagement and visitor centre teams.

The salary range for this position is $98,056 - $139,153 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
