The Ministry also manages the government's investment into transport, develops legislation and represents New Zealand's international interest in maritime and aviation affairs.We pride ourselves on being a small, agile, and friendly Ministry, which maintains a culture that is collaborative, bold, and invested. We have around 250 staff across our Wellington and Auckland offices. Our offices located in the heart of the waterfront further enhances the Ministry's working environment. The Ministry is committed to being a better Treaty partner and is on its journey of improving its understanding of te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.About the opportunity | Nga whakamarama mo te tungaThe nature of the transport system and the legislation we administer means our work sits across all modes of transport is varied and interesting and there are significant opportunities to grow and progress your career, alongside working challenging issues across the transport system.As a solicitor in our Legal team, you will provide legal advice to the Ministry and Ministers and be part of a collaborative team that actively supports each other and encourages a culture of learning through tuakana-teina relationships.We're open to graduates who are motivated and ready to start their career or solicitors who are motivated to continue to develop their career.Based on the work or support that may be required, this position is Wellington based only.What you'll bring | Te wahi ki a koeA law degree and the ability to hold a practising certificateKnowledge of basic public law, commercial contracting and statutory interpretation conceptsAn awareness of key legislation that applies to the public service, including the Official Information Act 1982 and the Privacy Act 2020Interest in the development of primary and secondary legislation in New ZealandInterest in the machinery of government, including Cabinet decision making processesInterest and experience in the transport sector or transport regulatory system is desirablePrevious experience working in an in-house legal or a public service department, Crown Entity or related agency is also desirable.The budgeted base salary for this position is $69,507 – $102,931 per annum (+ KiwiSaver).
