Mo tenei turanga | About this role
We have three available roles. Two are permanent and one is for a fixed term of two years. Two of the positions are newly created, while the third one is to fill a vacancy.
You will report directly to the Policy and Regulatory Legal Manager, Tania Nedelcheva-Pearson. Creating a collaborative and supportive working environment for the team is important to Tania. She cares about her kaimahi and is invested in their development and seeing them reach their full potential.
The legal matters you will handle will be of varying size and complexity and will require working collaboratively with and providing support to policy analysts and investigators, advising on legislative projects and regulatory compliance and enforcement matters, and liaising with Crown Solicitors, Crown Law, and Parliamentary Counsel Office. There will be opportunities to get involved in big projects, including supporting the creation and implementation of a regulatory regime for online gambling.
You will be based in Wellington, able to have a flexible working arrangement, enjoy meaningful mahi with a lot of variety, and will have access to support and development opportunities. You will also work with a tight-knit team of lawyers who are passionate about their work but also like to have a good laugh.
Te Tari Taiwhenua is committed in supporting our roia Maori by encouraging participation in Te Kura Huna and joining Te Hunga Roia Maori o Aotearoa. Te Tari Taiwhenua also has a large Tangata Whenua Network which provides valuable support for our kaimahi.
Mohou ake | About you

Intermediate to senior level of post-admission experience acquired in the public law with a focus in one or more of the following areas:


policy and legislative development;
working within regulatory frameworks and supporting the making of robust regulatory decisions;
working in operational environments;


Have proven knowledge and understanding of government processes and the machinery of government;
Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and interpersonal savvy;
Great written and verbal communication skills and the ability to tailor advice for the audience;
You must be comfortable being able to advise on the go, while also recognising when something may require more thorough research and analysis;
Willing to adapt and learn, and have a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach;
Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi is important to our work, so an interest in Maori/ Crown relations and the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi is desirable;
New Zealand qualified with a current practising certificate or the ability to obtain one.
