Nga korero mo te turanga – About the role We are looking for a senior research officer to join our vibrant Te Ngira research team. The role will include supporting staff in pursuing, managing, and delivering research projects through provision of research and data analytical support and supporting applications for external contracts. Salary will be in the range of $91,268 to $117,777 per year based on skills, knowledge, and experience brought to the position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours a week), based on our Hillcrest Campus. Ko wai koe? – Who are you? With strong quantitative analysis skills to process source, extract, and analyze population data from a range of sources, you will communicate the findings using your excellent report writing skills through comprehensive literature reviews and data analysis. In addition to your knowledge of research within the themes of Te Ngira, you will also have: Sound skills in using statistical software (e.g. SAS, R) Experience using and analyzing data from the New Zealand Census and associated population estimates and projections Experience in collating, cleaning, assembling, and analyzing data, and producing reports and summaries Experience in assessing for error and limitations in data and using statistical methods to supplement missing data The ability to communicate population concepts and data clearly and succinctly to non-technical colleagues Ability to assist with quality research that responds to the needs of Maori and iwi communities as well as research with and for people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Excellent written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills. Ko wai matou? – Who are we? Te Ngira - Institute for Population Research ('Te Ngira') is a research institute situated within the Division of Arts, Law, Psychology, and Social Sciences (ALPSS) at the University of Waikato. Te Ngira undertakes population research to help inform choices and responses to the demographic, social, and economic interactions that are shaping Aotearoa's future. We carry out world-leading research in Indigenous demography and data sovereignty, migration, and health equity. Our research program comprises four interconnected research platforms: Maori and Indigenous Populations; Population Health and Equity; Population Change; and Migration. Staff are supported by external research grants from a range of sources, including the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), the Marsden Fund, the Health Research Council, and contracts with central and local government, non-government, Iwi organizations, and business agencies. Te Ngira's research program addresses the most central questions of population studies – demographic transitions, population aging, population distribution, population health and health equity, migration, and ethnic and cultural diversity. It links them to economic, political, and social transformations, such as the aging of the labor force and regional development, to inform policymakers and planners at the local and national level.
