$79,656.00 - $100,639.00 pro-rata
Fixed term/secondment: until 30/06/2025, Whakatane location
This is a shared district role with approximately 70/30 split between Whakatane and Gisborne Districts
There will be an element of travel expected for this role with part of your responsibilities being in Tairawhiti District.

Are you passionate about protecting te taiao, with an interest in partnering with whanau, hapu, iwi and others to achieve conservation outcomes? Would you enjoy field delivery within diverse landscapes including coastal island, wetland, freshwater, and bush environment?
As Senior Ranger, Biodiversity you will work across the full spectrum of pest control, landscape, ecosystem and species protection and restoration.You will work closely and collaboratively with the Biodiversity/Community Supervisor and be part of a high performing District Leadership Team, shaping the district's overall direction and workplan. You will provide advice to the Operations Manager on how the district work program should reflect DOC's and our Treaty Partners priorities through understanding national priorities and the district context.
A key to the success of the biodiversity work in the district is its close working relationships and delivery of mahi alongside our iwi/hapu partners, regional and local councils and community stakeholders. The ability to maintain and build on the existing relationships with whanau, hapu and iwi, central and local government agencies, the wider community will be crucial.
You will also:
Lead the delivery of high-priority complex biodiversity tasks and relationship management.
Follow treaty principles to align the work of the team with whanau, hapu and iwi aspirations.
Alongside the Supervisor you will support the biodiversity team and the mahi they do out in the field.
Provide technical and strategic advice on matters relating to district biodiversity values/sites.
Develop annual operational plans for the team's work and support them in their leadership of this work month to month.
Manage and report on the Biodiversity budget and mahi.
You will be comfortable working in a changing environment and are a strategic thinker who can see the big picture and shift the work of the region to align with both DOC's organisational goals and the aspirations of whanau, hapu and iwi. You can communicate clear and concise recommendations for the decision maker.
If you have the following, we are keen to hear from you:
A strong commitment to Safety and Wellbeing in the workplace
Excellent budget and financial management skills and experience
Contract and project management experience
Experience in operating online system software
Strong relationship skills in working with others, particularly iwi Maori, but also other external stakeholders (i.e. community groups, landowners, regional councils).
Experience in working with tangata whenua and the ability to take cultural values into account when developing and prioritising work.
Skilled at coaching, training and supporting staff with the acquisition of technical knowledge
Proven resilience, with ability to keep calm under pressure while managing high profile work
Tertiary qualification or equivalent in ecology, biology or environmental sciences would be an advantage.
Full NZ drivers licence

The salary range for this position is $79,656 - $100,639 pro-rata with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
