We have a new and ambitious strategy focused on improving conservation outcomes and the Policy Directorate works across a range of policy, regulatory, and funding issues to achieve these. The Directorate ensures DOC has the right frameworks and settings in place to deliver on our outcomes for conservation, to meet Government priorities, and to be an honourable Treaty partner.
He angitutanga | About the team and the role We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Policy Advisor to join our team. This role will join our Biodiversity Systems Policy team to help us achieve better results for our precious and unique ecosystems, species, heritage and spaces. Recognising that the significant challenges for the climate also represent significant challenges for biodiversity, the team also leads work for DOC to bring a biodiversity lens to climate policy.
You will work to provide effective, sound advice for Ministers. Across the team's work programme, there will be opportunities to work within DOC and across a range of government agencies to shape and lead policy advice that encourages long-term carbon sequestration and storage through our native ecosystems, and climate adaptation policy that encourages and works with nature. There will also be opportunities to focus on changes to improve our conservation legislation and how it supports biodiversity outcomes, and to explore the policy implications around ensuring we are good Treaty partners.
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
Proven full policy analysis skills and machinery of government experience.Demonstrated track-record in providing logical, analytical and well-reasoned advice across complex policy matters or large-scale programmes of work.Experience planning and leading complex and long-term project-based policy work in a pragmatic and agile way.Well-developed collaboration and stakeholder management skills including experience building and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present critical information sharply and concisely, tailoring advice and analysis to the needs of others.Strong critical thinking capability – adept at identifying critical issues and risks when undertaking policy analysis and provides pragmatic solutions to problems.Ability to mentor and manaaki other colleagues in their work.Cultural awareness – understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi including the willingness to engage in Te Ao Maori concepts and/or understanding tikanga Maori.The Department of Conservation /Te Papa Atawhai places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow.
