As the Environmental Science Group at Stantec continues to grow, we are looking for a senior or principal level Environmental Scientist or Ecologist to join our team based in Wellington (but will also consider Christchurch or Auckland locations).
The work in the Environmental Science Group has been growing and this role is key to delivering projects that require ecology and/or water quality expertise.
About the role The Senior or Principal Environmental Scientist or Ecologist will be responsible for leading investigations, surveys and studies relating to aquatic ecology, water quality and environmental chemistry.
In addition, you will actively contribute to the growth and development of environmental science services in the lower North Island and throughout the country.
The role complements the skills of our other scientists, ecologists and experience offered by our wider Environmental Science Group and Community Development team which comprises environmental scientists, urban and rural planners, communications and engagement specialists and landscape architects.
Our team provides scientifically robust advice to its clients, based on industry leading knowledge and experience.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include Lead investigations, field surveys and studies in your specialist areas for major infrastructure projects locally and nationally.
Lead field surveys in your field of expertise, including wetland assessments, terrestrial and/or aquatic ecology.
Analysis and interpretation of water, sediment samples and/or ecological data.
Preparation of clear, concise technical reports, and peer review of technical reports prepared by others.
Act as a technical expert during resource consent processes relating to Council Hearings and Environment Court Managing projects, including regular liaison with clients, local and central government.
Sharing knowledge and mentoring other ecologists and scientists in the team.
Maintain and grow your networks and client relationships to pursue business development opportunities Achievement of revenue and utilisation targets for yourself and the team Expanding your knowledge by attendance and presenting at technical conferences, working across Stantec's other environmental disciplines and undertaking training and development to drive your career progression.
To be successful in this role you'll need Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Chemistry or a related discipline.
A post graduate qualification in any of the above disciplines or equivalent work experience A minimum of 7 years (senior) or 10 years (principal) professional experience, preferably in environmental consulting.
An in-depth understanding of survey methods and identification of native flora and fauna.
Familiarity with water quality/chemistry, including national standards and triggers (desired).
Familiarity with the RMA, NPS/NES, and Auckland Regional Plan is highly regarded.
A working knowledge of central or local government plans would be an advantage Industry membership and/or certification (desired) Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including highly developed technical reporting skills.
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
