Senior Forensic Accountant at Ministry for Primary Industries, Wellington - Petone Senior Forensic Accountant
Role type : Permanent
Location : Wellington – other main centres considered
Salary Range: $98,955 to $115,691 depending on skills and experience
You read 'a unique role' advertised all too often. In this case, it's true. There is just one Senior Forensic Accountant in Fisheries New Zealand. Fisheries New Zealand works to ensure that fisheries resources are managed to provide the greatest overall benefit to New Zealanders. Our focus is the sustainability of New Zealand's wild fish stocks, aquaculture, and the wider aquatic environment, now and for future generations. This role is pivotal to helping us realise this.
You'll be part of the Fisheries Compliance Monitoring and Intelligence team. You'll be focused on assessing the compliance risk of commercial licensed fish receivers (LFRs) by ensuring they are compliant with reporting and recordkeeping regulations. You'll be supporting Fishery Officers both in the planning and undertaking of inspections of LFR premises, as well as providing advice and training. You'll be working very closely with Fishery Officers across the motu, in 11 Districts, so domestic travel is required for this role. You'll also be required to provide advice to the commercial fishing sector around their regulatory requirements.
You'll be a Chartered Accountant with full membership to CAANZ. You'll have a passion for law enforcement, for analysing big datasets, and detecting non-compliance. This means that you're more than just curious. If you're reading over a data set which looks too good to be true, you'll be the sort of person who drills down to find out why.
Education is an important component of this role, so you'll enjoy mentoring your broader team.
You will:
Have an excellent understanding of accountancy principles and record keeping requirements as they relate to relevant New Zealand legislation
Be adept at writing reports, a skill you'll need when briefing senior leaders across the business
Be comfortable interrogating large data sets; there is an opportunity to bring new thinking and ideas to how we deliver results, and there's an appetite to evolve our practices
Have excellent communication skills (verbal, listening, and written) and be able to engage constructively with a wide range of people across the fisheries sector and government
Have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an ability to apply Maori knowledge and values to your work
Some knowledge of fisheries management and regulatory frameworks would be an advantage, but not essential
Require a NZ Divers Licence
You do not need to meet all the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.
