The Financial Accounting team are the centre of excellence for financial accounting here at Wellington City Council - providing expert advice to the wider Finance team and Council as a whole. The team is diverse, passionate and works in a collaborative way to deliver quality results. Led by a Manager with lots of great experience, the team are focused on growing their skills and knowledge while continually looking to improve. We want someone to join our team helping us ensure we have quality internal controls, smooth accounting processes and operations, adequate safeguards over financial assets, and ensuring the integrity of financial information. The Role and You We are looking for a Senior Financial Accountant to join us and play a leading role within a team of subject matter experts ensuring the Council meets its statutory reporting requirements. You will play a key role in the provision of the statutory financial statements for Council and the Group and ensure a smooth interim and year-end audit process. This will involve collaborating with stakeholders across Council to ensure we have the appropriate information for financial reporting. In this role you'll provide expert analysis and advice across a range of accounting issues and complete standard Senior Financial Accountant tasks such as month-end journals and balance sheet reconciliations. You will also be a key player in the financial accounting for our Treasury investments and borrowings, daily cash management and work alongside the Treasury team ensuring the Council meets all payment obligations. In addition to being technically strong, you will play an important part in providing coaching and mentorship within the team. You will be an enthusiastic, collaborative, and driven person and take pride in your role of safeguarding the integrity of the general ledger. Nga tohu me nga wheako | Qualifications and experience To support the Council to achieve its vision and priorities, you will need to draw on your technical expertise along with your confidence to analyse information to solve problems and make sound decisions. Engaging effectively with external and internal stakeholders to understand and respond to their perspectives and needs is an important aspect of this role as is your ability to work inclusively with people from different backgrounds and with different abilities. You will be a Chartered Accountant (or equivalent) and bring over 5 years' experience in working in large complex financial accounting environments. You'll be highly competent working with Excel and navigating accounting systems plus have excellent communication skills enabling you to communicate accounting and other issues to a range of stakeholders. Local government experience would be a plus, but it's not vital. You should have a positive attitude and enjoy a challenge, take initiative and have a desire to continue learning the profession you love, while growing in an organisation committed to your success and wellbeing.
