The role of Senior Financial Accountant offers a great opportunity to be part of an exciting sport during a time of unprecedented growth and change. The Senior Financial Accountant will oversee daily financial operations and ensure compliance with Public Benefit Entity (PBE) Tier 1 standards for our non-profit organization in the harness racing industry. This role involves managing day-to-day financial transactions, preparing financial reports, overseeing payroll, preparing financial statements and assisting with external audits and identifying areas for process improvement. The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in Xero, open to adopting new technology, and committed to continuous learning, with a focus on problem-solving and clear communication.Key Responsibilities:Financial Operations Oversight: Oversee and manage daily financial transactions and operations to ensure accuracy and efficiency.General Ledger Management: Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.Payroll Management: Oversee payroll operations, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and accurate payments.Financial Reporting: Prepare financial statements in compliance with PBE Tier 1 standards, meeting tight deadlines, particularly for year-end accounts. Assist with year-end audit preparation.Monthly Reporting: Provide a monthly update to the management team on financial performance with variance analysis. Prepare finance reports for Board meetings.Centralised Stakes Payments: Manage the Centralised Stakes Payments scheme and reconcile it to the accounting system and InfoHorse.Financial Reviews: Monitor the Authorised Syndicators' financial reporting requirements and obligations. Report on club financial performance and compliance with regulations.Compliance & Regulation: Ensure all financial activities comply with PBE standards, tax laws, and other regulatory requirements for non-profit entities in New Zealand.Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in preparing budgets, forecasts, and financial plans in collaboration with the Accounting & Reporting Manager.Cash Management: Assist with cashflow forecasting and investment decisions, ensuring optimal rates and terms for funds.Guidance & Support: Lead by example and provide guidance to the finance team, though the role does not include formal management responsibilities.Project Assistance: Assist with other project work as and when required.Required Skills and Mindset:Problem Solving: Ability to independently research and propose solutions to complex financial and accounting challenges, that enhance financial decision-making.Adoption of New Technology: Willingness to stay current with emerging accounting technologies and tools, and assist in implementing these solutions.Xero Proficiency: Strong experience using Xero to manage financial reporting, with an eye for identifying areas of process improvement.Clear Communication: Ability to explain complex financial information in a clear, concise manner, particularly when preparing board reports and working with non-financial stakeholders.Continuous Learning: Commitment to ongoing professional development and an openness to adapting to changes in the financial and regulatory landscape.Flexibility: Ability to adapt to organisational changes and take on evolving responsibilities as needed.Technical Skills: Familiarity with PBE Tier 1 standards, tax laws, and non-profit accounting regulations in New Zealand. A good knowledge of the Microsoft suite especially excel.Qualifications and Experience:Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CA preferred).Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial accounting, preferably within the non-profit sector or complex industries.About Us:Harness Racing New Zealand is the administrative body for the country's harness racing industry, working alongside stakeholders to promote and regulate the sport.
