We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Scientist to join our Data Science Practice, which enables ESR to push today's boundaries so we can see beyond the horizon into the future and drive action that solves some of the complex problems New Zealand is facing in terms of the environment, health, and forensics.
Reporting to our Data Scientist Lead, you'll deliver leading edge data science solutions, using innovative techniques, including agent-based modelling. You'll build national and international collaborations as well as lead and manage key research projects.
In this role you will be involved in:
Leading and project managing data science projects, ensuring robust and ethical analysis.
Developing and maintaining strong relationships and productive partnerships with key external stakeholders, clients, research organisations and data science communities that advance ESR's interest.
Participating in conferences and forums relating to research development activities, including innovation sprints.
Partnering with our science groups to develop and implement research ideas.
Communicating research insights within the organisation and with external stakeholders, identifying further opportunities to exploit data assets and models.
Contributing to developing the infrastructure, tooling and libraries for data science workflows including model development and pathways to production.
You'll have the opportunity to experiment with data, including mining, analysis and modelling using state-of-the-art AI methods. You'll push boundaries on languages, tools and technologies, including mobile, geospatial and edge computing.
We are flexible on working location across Aotearoa New Zealand, including Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

To be successful in this role you will have:
A PhD degree in Computer Science or a related field, along with a record of research publications in scientific journals.
Experience with statistics, mathematics, agent-based modelling, deep learning frameworks, machine learning, and other data science methods.
Advanced knowledge with leading scripting languages, including R, Python and data query languages, preferably SQL.
Proficiency with data visualisation tools.
Excellent project management, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare and present scientific information (written or verbal) to a range of audiences.
The ability to foster and develop external stakeholder and customer relationships for collaboration opportunities.
