Do you want to pass on your skills to others?If so, we want to hear from you!About the roleThis role is dedicated to ensuring our community spaces are clean, safe and welcoming for all visitors. We're looking for a gardening and outdoor maintenance guru, who enjoys working in the great outdoors. This is a physical role, which will include working as a team on various landscaping and outdoor projects to ensure the Southland District's parks, reserves and other facilities are kept in tip-top shape. You will be kept busy using a range of outdoor power-equipment. Due to the vast nature of our district, this role will also involve some travel; you should be a safe and confident driver, ideally with a good sense of direction in the Southland district. As a Senior, you will also be a key mentor to less experienced team members, leading them while out in the field. You will have a keen eye for detail and be highly efficient, to ensure a cost-effective and high-quality service is provided.Responsibilities will include:Carry out maintenance and one-off projects on Council-owned land, assets, and reserves to a high standard.Demonstrate expertise and safe operation in the use and maintenance of machinery and equipment, including mowers, chainsaws, scrub bars, hedge trimmers.Provide advice, guidance and mentor team members in the field.Look for opportunities to modify or replace equipment, to enhance safety, improve service and reduce operating costs.Our ideal candidate will:Enjoy physical labour and working outdoors.Be diligent with health and safety, thorough and take pride in their work.Be able to prioritise and work to deadlines.Possess excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively in a team environment.Be competent using a computer and possess a full driver's license.Be passionate about developing and leading others in the field.About CouncilWith 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island, The Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority.
