Details of the offer

The New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga is small but mighty and hasn't been around long by government standards. But our job is as big as it gets, helping New Zealand get the right infrastructure, whether it's transport connections that get us from a to b, water and power connections needed to support affordable homes, or schools and hospitals that support our communities.Te Waihanga seeks to transform infrastructure for all New Zealanders. By doing so our goal is to lift the economic performance of Aotearoa and improve the wellbeing of all New Zealanders. All this is why we need you.We are looking for a fixed-term Senior Advisor to join the Inquiries team until June 2025. You will assist the Commission to deliver its research and strategy functions and promote understanding of how the infrastructure system in New Zealand, and the services it provides, can be improved. In 2024/25 the team is researching potential policy and system reforms as part of the Commission's work to develop the National Infrastructure Plan. The Senior Adviser will contribute towards a project comparing institutional settings of different infrastructure sectors over time and across jurisdictions (primarily via desk-based research). Through this project we want to answer questions such as:What can we learn from how other countries structure their electricity network, in terms of their efficiency, resilience and affordability? How have changes to road transport funding institutions in New Zealand affected performance and value for money? To do this you will be experienced at things like:Undertaking robust research and analysis including literature reviews.Writing clear and concise reports for a wide audience.Planning, organising and managing research activities and outputs.Engaging with stakeholders to test research, analysis and advice. You'll be an effective team member, able to support the Director Inquiries and contribute to organisational culture, and have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Crown's responsibility to act as a good partner and be willing to engage with Te Ao Maori perspectives and frameworks. You might be an experienced researcher with an interest in policy implications of your research, or a policy professional with exceptional analytical and communication skills wanting to move into a research-focused role.Ideally you will have:A research-based post-graduate qualification in a related discipline.Experience in the machinery of government.Knowledge of issues and trends associated with Infrastructure in New Zealand, and/or experience working in infrastructure (including transport, water, energy, waste, education or health).Te Waihanga is what's called an Autonomous Crown Entity or, even better, an ACE. We think about the whole infrastructure system – roads, waterpipes, powerlines, you name it – and our job is to give advice and uncover the insights that can make it all work as well as it can, supporting an Aotearoa that's great for the generations to come. Our people are smart and passionate about this stuff. They're friendly and, this being a relatively small organisation, it's easy to work with anyone here and to have an impact. We don't do hierarchy or stand on ceremony. We also value our people, and it's important to us that you feel welcome, supported, and respected. We also have flexible working that supports the individual, the team and the organisation. How to ApplyPlease take a look at the job description below and get in touch.
