In this pivotal role, you will provide strategic advice and support to the Mayor and act as a key liaison between elected members and senior Council staff. You will proactively identify issues, risks, and opportunities to support the achievement of Council's strategic objectives.This position requires a person who has a passion for Nelson and an ambition for its City Council to be a high-performing organisation that provides good quality service and value for money. The role is to provide advice, support, and information to help the Mayor achieve their aspirations for the city and to support Councillors to work well as a team and to ensure strong and effective relationships with Council staff.Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead a team of two, consisting of a Communications Adviser and an Executive Assistant. Together, the team will provide high-quality advice, support, and services to the Mayor, Councillors, staff, and the public.We're looking for someone with the following competencies:Excellent verbal and written communication skillsWell-developed relationship management skills including the ability to quickly build trust and credibilityHigh level of political acumenSound judgement on policy mattersAbility to lead and motivate a teamA tertiary qualification in an appropriate field or equivalent experienceIdeally, you will also have:Understanding of the public sector including local government decision-making processes and relevant legislationUnderstanding of the role of the Mayor and Councillors in governance and its interaction with Management.Understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of WaitangiFor an articulate and motivated professional, this is an enviable career and lifestyle opportunity in a fabulous location.
