About the role
The Seaman Combat Specialist School (SCSS) is responsible for all Seamanship, Ceremonial and Small Arms Training within the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).
The SCSS also trains personnel for force protection, boarding, height safety and crane work. You will conduct seamanship training and assist in the development of courses involved with seamanship training.
You will also be responsible for ensuring that the training of all lessons taught to students is delivered at the highest possible standard and is correct as laid down in the relevant publications available to them.
All training will be deck operations based and not at bridge/command level. You will be delivering training in:
Cordage, knots, rigging, slinging and lashings.
Anchoring, berthing and mooring operations of ships up to 23,000 tons in displacement.
Replenishment at sea of NATO specification warships.
Towing of ships by other ships.
Launching of ships' small boats via both crane and davit.
Health and safety practice in the maritime domain.
Height safety practices and safety harness use.
Working at height (basic user level).
Man overboard recovery operations.
Launching of inflatable life rafts.
Deployment of boarding, boat and accommodation ladders.

Skills and Experience
We are looking for a trainer who has seamanship experience through prior service in the Royal NZ Navy, the British Commonwealth or the United States Navy.
Ideally you will have held the rank of at least Leading Hand/E4 or above and will be able to identify training needs and deliver effective training to a wide range of people across all levels of an organisation (individual and group training), this will be supported with instructor qualifications.
Having excellent planning and organisational skills enables you to meet timeframes and effectively manage changing priorities.
You will bring knowledge of working at height using fall arrest systems. It is highly desirable that the applicant holds a working at height qualification NZQA unit standards 23229, 23232, 19359 and 15757 and as an assessor NZQA unit standard 4098.
You must have a class 1 unrestricted driver licence.

You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
