Are you passionate about satellite remote sensing and weather analysis? Become the go-to expert for interpreting and analysing cutting-edge weather products derived from remote sensing data. Take ownership of our remote sensing datasets, working to enhance and streamline product capabilities. Collaborate with our innovative team and specialists to upgrade our forecasting systems and make a real impact on the future of weather prediction!
Key accountabilities of the role: Identifying and analysing issues and interdependencies to enable MetService to effectively cater to customer and business needs.
Translation of data and intelligence into usable information and remaining up to date with technology trends and methodologies to support better outcomes and decision making.
Independently evaluate and apply scientific techniques, process and criteria, using judgement in making minor adaptations and modifications.
Co-authoring referred publications, contract reports and science extension activities and may occasionally be the first author.
Undertakes project work with other scientists and collaborates with other teams and provides subject matter support for less experienced team members.
This role will ideally be based in Whaingaroa (Raglan) or Te-Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and will commence in January 2025.
Minimum Requirements: A tertiary qualification or post-graduate qualification (M.Sc or PhD level) in a relevant scientific or engineering field.
Previous experience analysing and processing remote sensing data, ideally for satellite-based radar and/or spectral applications. Experience with machine learning is a plus.
Ability to critically assess the code base for existing remote sensing data products and develop solutions when customers raise issues.
Experience with cloud computing (e.g. AWS or Azure) and using GIS software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS, Surfer, Global Mapper).
Proficiency in Python and experience working in Linux environment.
