Formed in 2020, Neptune Pacific Line acquired Pacific Direct Line, bringing together two of the South Pacific's top shipping and logistics companies to support the full supply chain of our customers in the region. NPDL is part of The Wonderful Company headquartered in the USA (including Fiji Water). NPDL operates 9 containerships, moving +240k TEU between AU, NZ and the Pacific Islands, as well as the USA. We have strong partnerships with other shipping lines, moving cargo across 25 customer destinations in 16 countries.
Job DescriptionAs the Safety Advisor Stevedoring & DG, you'll be the go-to expert, driving a culture of safety across our entire organization. You'll partner with internal stakeholders to inspire proactive safety behaviours, ensuring that health and safety are always at the forefront of our operations. Your primary focus will be on NPDL's extensive Stevedoring and DG/Hazchem activities, spanning internal business units, joint ventures, and third-party operations. With a global reach, you'll be the trusted advisor, steering the company towards its ambitious EHS strategic goals while aligning with both legislative and organizational standards. This exciting role offers you the opportunity to make a tangible impact, with regular site visits across New Zealand and international travel to the Pacific Islands, ensuring safety excellence wherever we operate.
What you will be doing: Governance:Drive Strategic Safety Initiatives: Partner with the Group Operations & Planning Manager to shape and execute tactical and strategic H&S plans that set the standard across the business.Lead Site-Specific Safety Excellence: Guide site management in crafting and executing tailored safety plans, ensuring continuous improvement through regular reviews.Champion Compliance: Ensure every operation meets and exceeds relevant Health & Safety legislation, keeping us ahead of the curve.Own Risk Management: Lead dynamic risk assessments, inspections, audits, and incident investigations (ICAM) to deliver actionable results.Communicate with Impact: Produce top-tier reports and presentations that inform and inspire, driving safety initiatives forward.Transform Incidents into Learning: Develop compelling safety learning tools, from PowerPoint presentations to safety alerts, and ensure timely approval and dissemination.Standardize Risk Management: Facilitate a consistent, proactive approach to risk management with business-wide assessments and effective corrective actions.Master Data Management: Oversee EHS data accuracy and integrity within the Enablon risk management system, ensuring precise safety statistics and comprehensive performance reports.Advise and Lead: Provide expert guidance on statutory requirements and the latest best practices, keeping management at the forefront of EHS and training developments.Leadership:Inspire Field Safety: Lead by example during field interactions, coaching and training employees to ensure top-tier safety practices on the ground.Lead EHS Engagement: Conduct impactful EHS visits and workplace inspections, fostering a culture of safety in every area of responsibility.Empower Safety Reps: Engage and develop health and safety representatives, elevating the role of site committee meetings.Make Safety Decisions: Take decisive action by halting high-risk activities when necessary, and lead efforts to reduce risks to ALARP.Champion Change Management: Support site leadership in prioritizing safety during operational changes, ensuring alignment with NPDL change management standards.Escalate When Needed: Ensure that unresolved business risks are escalated promptly, keeping EHS functional managers fully informed.Lead Investigations: Take charge of incident investigations, driving them to conclusion with thoroughness and precision.Elevate EHS Education: Continuously train and educate employees on the EHS Management system, maintaining a high standard of competency across the board.Keep Training Relevant: Ensure training needs analyses are up to date, and that all site training records are accurate, accessible, and in line with NPDL standards.Other Responsibilities:Champion Injury Management: Ensure that all Company and statutory injury management requirements are met, minimizing downtime and promoting swift recovery.Manage Return to Work Plans: Develop and oversee Return to Work Plans, ensuring they are approved by management and strictly adhered to across the business.Monitor Workplace Hazards: Coordinate and conduct environmental monitoring, measuring hazards such as dust, noise, and more, to maintain a safe work environment.Address Environmental Concerns: Tackle environmental issues raised by various NPDL business groups, ensuring a proactive and responsible approach.Adhere to Policies: Carry out all duties in alignment with NPDL Policies, Procedures, Work Instructions, and OHS legislation, setting the gold standard for safety and compliance.QualificationsWhat you'll bring to the table: Expertise in Safety: A tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline, equipping you with the knowledge to lead and inspire.Proven Experience: Over 5 years of hands-on experience in Occupational Health and Safety, with a track record of success in high-stakes environments.Industry Insight: Deep experience in high-risk industries, particularly in shipping, logistics, and the management of dangerous goods, making you a seasoned pro in safety-critical roles.Port and Stevedoring Savvy: Previous experience in port operations or stevedoring, giving you the practical insights needed to excel in this specialized field.Incident Mastery: Extensive experience in incident investigations, injury management, auditing, and facilitation, ensuring you can handle any challenge with confidence and skill.Legislative Knowledge: A strong understanding of New Zealand's safety legislation is essential, with bonus points for familiarity with the safety laws of other Pacific nations.This is a full-time permanent role based in Auckland.
