Roia O Te Karauna | Crown Counsel, Treaty Team

Details of the offer

Crown Law – Wellington Central, North Island
Crown Law provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown in matters affecting the executive government. These matters include judicial review of government actions, constitutional questions including te Tiriti/Treaty of Waitangi issues, the enforcement of criminal law and the protection of revenue. Crown Law also provides leadership to several government networks.
We are currently looking for Crown Counsel (ideally with 6+ years post-qualification experience) into our Treaty team, which deals with issues with a Maori/Crown dimension, particularly in the context of te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi. We are seeking applications from lawyers who are interested in:
working at the interface of government and te ao Maori;
advice work, litigation, mediation and negotiation for the Crown;
joining a diverse team of great people, who are committed to a collegial, supportive and enjoyable environment, and who care about the issues they are working on.
A role in this team offers:
cutting-edge work spanning a range of areas of law (including for example constitutional, public and administrative law, commercial law and equity/trusts);
development opportunities for anyone wanting to pursue a litigation career;
experience in Tiriti/Treaty-related issues, a core component of any public sector or public law career;
opportunities to further your knowledge of te ao Maori and to apply that knowledge in your day-to-day work;
contact with Ministers and a wide range of officials;
autonomy in terms of taking charge of files and client relationships;
opportunities to mentor and develop junior staff.
We would like to talk to people with a range of skill-sets. We are interested in applicants with:
strong analytical skills, practical problem-solving skills and people skills;
strong oral and written communication skills;
knowledge and understanding of te ao Maori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system and the Crown's responsibilities as a Treaty partner (or a willingness to develop and apply that knowledge and understanding).
Public sector experience is desirable but not essential.
You will be joining an organisation that values diversity, work-life balance and flexibility, and prides itself on creating opportunities for team members to develop their skills and experience. We look after the mana of other people, take pride in all we do, value our differences, recognise our impact on others and care about each other. Having knowledge and understanding of te reo Maori and tikanga Maori is recognised and valued within the organisation.
This role is Wellington-based. Crown Law is located next to the Wellington bus and train station. We are a flexible organisation, so we'd be happy to chat about what flexible working would look like for you and how we can support that.
Remuneration and Benefits:
The starting salary range for this role is $114,585 - $187,839. The appointing salary will be based on skills and experience.
In addition, you will also receive 5 weeks' annual leave plus 3 additional leave days (Crown Law days).
To be considered for a position at Crown Law you must have a legal right to live and work in New Zealand and are required to complete a Ministry of Justice Criminal Records Check.
You must hold a current practising certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society or be able to obtain one before or soon after starting at Crown Law.
All applications should include a covering letter and curriculum vitae.
Access requirements and/or whanau support will be taken into account when arranging interviews.
