Looking for a frontline field-based role working to save one of the world's most endangered penguin species? Use your conservation skills and join our team in the delivery of our yellow-eyed penguin conservation program. Work outdoors across the Otago coastline from North Otago to the Catlins. We are seeking a Ranger for the 2024/2025 season to join our field team delivering hoiho management and habitat fieldwork. This is an exciting role. Covering the hoiho breeding season you will be carrying out the hoiho field monitoring program. This involves tasks such as hoiho nest searching, hatching and chick monitoring, moult management and a wide range of other tasks to minimise the environmental impacts affecting the hoiho's survival. As part of this programme this role also carries out habitat restoration work such as planting, track maintenance and weed control, together with predator control and hoiho advocacy. About Us The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust's work involves the conservation of coastal ecosystems that include hoiho breeding habitats. It protects hoiho by managing birds and their habitat along the Otago and Southland coastlines, by establishing and protecting penguin reserves, replanting breeding areas with native trees and shrubs produced at its own nursery, trapping predators, monitoring hoiho to assist their survival, funding research and advocating and educating about the need for penguin conservation. The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust is a Registered Charity and is funded from grants, donations, sponsorships and bequests. This position is fixed-term from October 2024 to June 2025, as, with all our roles, it is funded from Trust donations and is based on funds available. Key Tasks Hoiho Management Assist with the hoiho field monitoring programme. Working with other staff and volunteers, this includes nest searching; nest/chick checks; moult checks. Work with others to identify the course of action for sick, injured or underweight birds. Release of rehabilitated hoiho adults and chicks, including soft release. Keep accurate data and input up-to-date records of hoiho identifications, location, tracking movements etc. Habitat Restoration Track maintenance for hoiho, vehicles and visitors. Weed control: spraying, scrub cutting and pest plant removal. Planting and plant maintenance. Predator Control Control of pests including mustelids, cats and possums. Monitoring and maintaining traplines. Other Tasks Work with the team to maintain fences, gates and infrastructure in the Reserves and Nursery as required. Maintain and develop good working relationship with the community. Advocacy. Administration and record-keeping. About You Qualification and Experience Experience of handling and/or monitoring native species. Experience in habitat restoration or similar. Experience of working in the field including remotely or in a team. Data skills including Microsoft programmes (Word, Excel). Good communication and interpersonal skills. First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain same). GrowSafe Certificate (or willingness to obtain same). Personal Attributes Required Demonstrated commitment to health and safety. Commitment to conservation and the environment. High level of physical fitness. Willingness to work as part of a small team including with volunteers where required. Other Requirements Right to work in New Zealand as either a NZ citizen or permanent resident. Full driver's licence essential; experience driving manual vehicles and 4WD experience preferred. Competency with Microsoft Word, Excel and other IT systems, software and databases. Able to stay overnight on occasion at our Field Base in the Catlins. Apply Interested?
