Mo to matou ropu - About our team This role will be embedded in the Wellington Regional Hospital Critical Care Units. Wellington ICU is one of New Zealand's largest and busiest ICUs, providing tertiary (advanced) level care for over 1800 patients every year.
Wellington HDU is a new unit with 8 HDU beds. We are a referral centre for 9 hospitals within both the Greater Wellington region and upper South and lower North Islands, for a population of over a million people.
To do this, we employ 250 staff to provide 24/7 care operating within a flat hierarchy team structure. We also operate a large research unit and New Zealand's busiest aeromedical retrieval service.
This role will be supported by the ORA Allied Health team, a multidisciplinary team who work across the entire CCDHB region in the inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
We are a team of Allied Health professionals who put our patients at the centre of everything they do to maximise outcomes and independence for our people.
Korero mo te turanga - About the role This is a new position, working alongside an established Senior Clinical Psychologist, to expand the psychology service in supporting patients, whanau, and staff, in Critical Care at Wellington Hospital.
This role offers an opportunity to work with a high performing and supportive multidisciplinary team, in an environment where psychological input is valued by patients, families, and staff alike.
ICU can be a distressing place for patients, family, and staff. An important aspect of the role is to maximise psychological safety for all impacted by an ICU experience.
Identifying those most in need of specialist psychological support is another key part of the role. Delivery of intervention is specific to need, relying on assessment and formulation, and may vary from working with patients to enhance engagement in rehabilitation, families to manage acute stress, or alongside multidisciplinary staff to develop coordinated care plans.
Patients are admitted to ICU for a range of medical reasons and present with a wide range of psychological difficulties. While some may stay for only a few days, increasingly more are staying for weeks or even months. Longer-stay patients present unique mental and physical health needs as they slowly recover from critical illness.
The potential to improve the psychological care provided to those who are critically unwell, as well as their whanau is significant.
The unique environment of Critical Care presents a range of diverse psychological opportunities, risks, and challenges for all who work here.
As a responsible employer, we constantly seek ways to support our most valuable asset - our staff. Contributing towards staff wellbeing interventions, learning, and development, is a key component of the service for psychology in Critical Care.
No two days will be the same and alongside delivering a clinical service, a key focus will be contributing towards service development and improvement.
This role is 0.5FTE (20hrs per week). Days and hours of work are negotiable; however, these will ideally be spread across the week, in concert with the established ICU Psychologist, to be able to respond to the needs of the unit.
Mou - About you We are looking for trailblazing Clinical or Health Psychologist who is up for the challenge of working with others to develop and deliver a service in this exciting clinical area.
You'll be someone who is great at building relationships, working in an agile manner, is excited by the prospect of forging a new path, and can work both autonomously and collaboratively.
Responsibilities can mould to match the developing skills of the successful candidate and areas of interest or focus can be shared with the existing ICU Psychologist.
You'll be keen to share the knowledge you have and be open to learning and growing your own skillset. We recognise this may be an unfamiliar service setting, so welcome enquiries from Health or Clinical Psychologists who would like to understand more about the role.
