The Waitangi Tribunal is a standing commission of inquiry.
It investigates and makes recommendations on claims brought by Maori relating to legislation, policies, actions, or omissions of the Crown alleged to breach the promises made in the Treaty of Waitangi.
We are looking for a hard-working, talented and motivated person to join us as a Principal Historian who will provide technical leadership to the Report Writing team.
The Principal Historian is a key role within the unit, working closely with the report writing manager, the Chief Historian, the other Principal Historian within the team, senior report-writers, and other technical leaders across the unit.
You will be able to:
Continue the implementation of innovative ways of working and new capabilities in report writingDemonstrate excellent communication, writing, and stakeholder management skillsHave a thorough knowledge of Treaty principles and Waitangi Tribunal jurisprudenceAdvise staff and Tribunal panels on report writing, analysis, and findingsUndertake quality assurance reviewsAssist the Tribunal with high priority and urgent writing tasksPlan, coordinate and supervise report writing projects across a number of inquiriesTo be successful in the role you will be:
Qualified to master's degree level in disciplines relevant to the work of the Waitangi Tribunal such as history, law, public policy, Maori studies and social science; or have equivalent research-based professional experienceMethodical and objective in your approach, have a strong track record of professional achievement, and a proven ability to lead large writing projects involving multiple stakeholdersAn effective communicator with a strong focus on customer service, able to inspire and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholdersKnowledgeable about and committed to the work of the Waitangi TribunalKnowledgeable in te reo and tikanga Maori and be committed to further developing skills in this areaAt Te Tahu o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice, we're committed to strengthening people's trust in the law of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
