Au Mahi | What You Will Do
As Principal Data Engineer/Architect at the University of Canterbury (UC), you will be pivotal in optimising and enhancing our data layer to enable advanced data solutions, analytics, visualisations, and self-service capabilities across the university.
You will:
Design and implement scalable data architectures and solutions that enable advanced analytics.
Ensure data integrity, quality, and accessibility while leading strategic initiatives across the organization.
Model data from source systems, external data files, and services into the data warehouse, ensuring consistency in naming, rules, semantics, and security while meeting the needs of data consumers.
Lead the entire development lifecycle of analytics solutions—including analysis, design, build, testing, and rollout—while collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive strategic data initiatives that align with UC goals.
This role combines advanced technical expertise with strategic vision to deliver robust, maintainable data solutions, enhancing the user experience for staff and students.
You will be an experienced Data Engineer/Architect with at least 8 years in IT or related fields, with at least 5 years focused on data architecture and advanced analytics platforms (data warehouse/data lake), as well as have:
Hold a Bachelor's Degree (NZQA Level 7) in Computer Science or equivalent or a Tertiary qualification (relevant to the industry).
Proven experience with Snowflake for data warehousing, including architecture design, performance tuning, and best practices.
Extensive use of DBT for building and managing data transformation workflows.
Experience with standard reporting and visualisation tools such as Power BI and cloud environments.
Strong knowledge of data analytics techniques, methodologies, and frameworks, with a focus on data governance and compliance.
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL), as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
Designing and delivering on-prem and cloud analytical solutions.
Data discovery and data structures.
Knowledge of frameworks such as AWS, AZURE, Amazon S3 Storage, Apache Hadoop.
Experience in leading cross-functional teams, driving data strategy, and mentoring junior data professionals.
