Te ahuatunga a te turanga / About the roles
We are looking for policy advisors with some experience to join the Ministry of Justice's Policy Group. The roles are available in various Policy Group teams, including the Access to Justice, Victims and Youth Justice, Court Stewardship and Civil Law Teams.
The Access to Justice Team seeks to ensure equitable access to the courts and other dispute resolution mechanisms that allow people to access civil justice and enforce their rights and responsibilities.
This work includes providing advice on support for people who cannot afford to pay for legal advice, our tribunals system and regulation of the legal profession.
The Criminal Justice Unit provides oversight of the criminal justice system through stewardship of key legislation and leadership on critical domestic and international criminal justice issues.
The Courts Stewardship Team was set up in 2022 to develop a best practice approach to regulatory stewardship in the courts and tribunals systems, with an eye to what will also work across the Ministry's other regulatory systems.
The team plays a role in capacity building to grow the Ministry's stewardship capability, connecting with the inter-agency regulatory stewardship community, and running cyclical Regulatory Systems Amendment Bill processes.
The Civil Law Team focuses on relationships between people rather than between the state and its citizens and has a significant impact on people's lives.
The team is responsible for a broad range of civil law systems, including property law, contract, trust law, wills and succession of estates and the regulation of some occupations and industries.
It administers the Privacy Act 2020 and is also responsible for the Ministry's cross-agency contribution to the development and use of AI.

Policy advisors (Level 2) in the Policy Group have some experience of the policy process or equivalent experience, and work with others to resolve complex and challenging issues.
The successful candidates will demonstrate :
Relationship skills. Do you have strong skills in engaging with diverse internal and external stakeholders, learning from their perspectives as well as influencing them?
Problem solving skills. Can you think analytically and critically? Do you find complex problems interesting, and have a knack for solving them?
Communication skills. Are you an excellent communicator? Can you write clearly, in a way that simplifies complex information?
Advisory skills. Do you have knowledge of machinery of Government and public policy?
Work management skills. Are you able to plan, prioritise, and organise work to deliver on short and long-term projects?
The Justice Policy Group actively seeks a diverse applicant pool, with a variety of life experiences. An understanding of Te Ao Maori and the Treaty of Waitangi is particularly valuable.

Utu a-tau / Salary Range
The appointing salary for a Policy Advisor (Level 2) will be between $83,562 and $107,862, based on skills and experience.
