Position Title: Entry-Level Police Officer

Salary: $103,944 – $136,104 annually

Location: Various locations in the Seattle area

Important Notes: Hiring Bonus: New hires receive a $7,500 hiring bonus.
Workshops and Recruiters: The department offers applicant workshops and direct recruiter connections for potential candidates to learn more about careers in policing and the application process.

Hiring Process: Application: Submit your application directly to the City of Seattle. A resume and cover letter are optional. Exams: Register and complete the law enforcement exams through the National Testing Network (NTN), which includes: Frontline National Exam Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) Parts 1 & 2 Physical Agility Test (WAPAT): Schedule and complete this test as prompted during the NTN exam scheduling. This is a requirement for moving forward in the hiring process. Background Investigation: Candidates who pass the exams and WAPAT will complete a personal history form for a thorough background check. Medical, Psychological, and Polygraph Exams: Candidates undergo medical evaluations, including drug screening, vision and hearing tests, a stress EKG, a psychological exam, and a polygraph test. Final Offer: Upon successful completion of all hiring steps, candidates receive an official offer of employment with SPD. Preference Points: Preference points may be added to passing scores for qualifying candidates, including veterans, multilingual applicants, those with human/social services experience, and individuals with prior City of Seattle service as Police Reserves, 911 dispatchers, or Parking Enforcement Officers. Job Responsibilities: Maintain public safety by patrolling neighborhoods, responding to emergencies, and enforcing laws. Conduct investigations, collect evidence, and make arrests. Provide first aid, transport individuals in custody, and testify in judicial settings. Officers work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Qualifications: Age: Must be at least 20.5 years old. Citizenship: U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient. Education: High school diploma or GED. Minimum Employment Standards: Drug Use: Must meet specific standards for past drug use, including no marijuana use within 12 months and no other illegal drugs within specified time frames. Traffic Record: Driving records must be clean, with no DWI, reckless driving, or hit-and-run convictions in the past five years. Criminal History: No felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or serious criminal offenses. Employment and Financial History: Employment and credit history will be reviewed as part of the background check process. Additional Requirements: Professional Appearance: SPD expects officers to maintain a professional appearance. Tattoos and other modifications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Driver's License: Must hold a valid Washington State Driver's License before hire. Typing Skills: Proficiency in typing 35 words per minute is preferred but not required.
