Ophthalmology Consultant Opportunity On New Zealand`S North Island

Details of the offer

Are you an Ophthalmologist looking for a new opportunity? We are looking for someone to join our service providing specialist secondary care services to the region. This fulltime (1FTE) position would be suitable for an experienced or a newly qualified specialist. The successful applicant will be a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a subspeciality interest. We are seeking a vitreo-retinal specialist although other subspecialty interests would be considered. The role along with local and subregional ophthalmic service provision will include supervision of registrars and teaching of University of Otago Medical School Trainee Interns. The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) team currently comprises four experienced locally based consultant Ophthalmologists and one visiting consultant Ophthalmologist. The wider eye service includes two registrars (one RANZCO vocational trainee), ophthalmic clinic nurses (incl. extended practice roles), an orthoptist, ophthalmic technicians, and visiting optometrists. The service provides specialist outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology services, and primary health care support. The service provides a regional cancer treatment service to a wider catchment across the lower North Island. Technologically the service is well resourced with OCT, Argon retinal laser, YAG laser, Selective Laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), cyclodiode laser, Centurion phacoemulsification and DORC posterior vitrectomy equipment and Pentacam. This is an exciting time to join the team as it is embarking upon a transformational change programme to firmly establish itself as a high performing health system that meets the current and future demands of its communities, that provides improved patient experiences for service users, and that achieves improved patient and community health and wellbeing. The service will build on its significant achievements to date, in particular its investment in developing primary and community care services and relationships. It will work to further reduce service duplication and fragmentation, to move care into and closer to people's homes, and to achieve an integrated and community focused high performing health system. The employer provides healthcare services to over 180,000 people across the Manawatu, Horowhenua and Tararua regions. With a large hospital campus at Palmerston North, it also provides key health care and support services to neighbouring communities. Applicants must be eligible for vocational registration in Ophthalmology with the Medical Council of New Zealand as well as having demonstrated clinical, management, and teaching skills and the ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
