Operations ManagerSupporting BCI's purpose – 'Enabling a Successful Farming Future'Operational engineering, asset management and project deliveryAshburton, New ZealandWho are we?Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Limited (BCI) is a farmer-focused co-operative that owns and operates irrigation, electricity generation, and stock water infrastructure capable of delivering water to circa 30,000 ha between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers on the East Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. Utilising over 300km of pipeline, open channel race, 40+ pump stations, and over 200 offtakes, we deliver sustainable, reliable water within the constraints of our water use and nutrient discharge consents to a vast array of farming and commercial operations throughout Mid Canterbury.The RoleThis is a new senior position with BCI, which has been created as part of our investment in expanded capability and capacity within our Operations Team. With future projects to deliver and a strong focus on service delivery and proactive asset management, BCI is looking for a dedicated individual to lead our Operations Team (comprising the Operations Manager and 3 scheme operators).The role will oversee the day-to-day operation of the Barrhill Chertsey and Acton irrigation schemes, ensuring efficient, effective delivery of water, managing shareholders/scheme relationships, monitoring scheme performance using SCADA, and providing preventative and reactive maintenance to scheme assets. As a member of the BCI Management team, you will work closely with other functional leaders, as well as our water ordering and planning teams. You will assist with scheme projects as required and contribute actively to the wider BCI team.ResponsibilitiesBe accountable for the operational leadership for BCI's water delivery operations, which includes all shareholder water delivery functions.Ensure the efficient, effective, and safe operation of the water distribution assets managed by BCI (including schemes to which BCI delivers service).Maintain and operate the assets to deliver water reliably and cost-effectively to the company's shareholding customers.Achieve maximum life-expectancy from the assets.Lead and manage the operations team – ensuring a strong culture across Health & Safety, compliance, customer-focus, and environmental responsibility.Working with industry leaders, external partners, and end users, this is a broad role suited to someone with proven experience leading and managing a highly effective team that is focused on achieving excellence and meeting or exceeding individual, functional, and company performance targets.What do you need?Qualifications and ExperienceEssentialMinimum 8 years' experience in an operations role in a related industry.Minimum 3 years' experience managing the day-to-day outcomes of a team.Sound technical knowledge and proven ability in the management of the operations and maintenance of water infrastructure assets.Sound technical knowledge of SCADA and other remote operations and monitoring applications.Commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to manage financials and develop sound business cases.Experience or knowledge of strategic planning - developing long-term plans within a capital-intensive environment.Ability to foster and drive high performing teams.DesirableTertiary qualification in engineering (mechanical, electrical, or civil)Operational experience with an irrigation schemeExperience in the management of major capital projects.AttributesAbility to contribute effectively within a small team.Ability to see and develop opportunities to improve the way things are done and to provide the proof to achieve that change.Practical implementation skills and a can-do attitude.A strong understanding and commitment to the goals and objectives of the company and can articulate these.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and report writing skills.Actively demonstrates professionalism and engenders the respect of all stakeholders.Computer literacy in MS Office package is essential.Excellent attention to detail.Strong negotiation and advocacy skills.What are we offering?Industry-leading salaryCompany vehicle including personal useOn-going internal and external developmentThis is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career by being responsible for critical infrastructure supporting our primary industry with one of the most enviable backdrops in the world.For further information on BCI, please visit our website.Please email for a position description or with any confidential enquiries.
